HWP Table to Excel

Copying a table out of an HWP file into Excel usually breaks merged cells and turns numbers into text. This tool reads the tables straight from the file and writes a clean .xlsx workbook, one sheet per table or all on one sheet.

What comes across

Cell text, line breaks inside cells, merged cells (as merged ranges) and numbers. Fonts, colours, borders and column widths from the HWP file are not copied; columns are sized to fit the text. A table inside another table's cell is listed on its own and its text also stays in that cell.

How to use HWP Table to Excel

  1. 1Drop one or more .hwp or .hwpx files into the box. The tables appear with a preview.
  2. 2Tick the tables you want. Tables nested in another table's cell are listed too, unticked, because their text is already in that cell.
  3. 3Choose One sheet per table or All tables on one sheet, and whether numbers should be stored as numbers.
  4. 4Click Download .xlsx, or save a single table, or all ticked tables, as CSV.

What is kept

  • Merged cells: a cell that spans rows or columns in the HWP table becomes the same merged range in Excel, with its text in the top-left cell.
  • Cell text: including line breaks inside a cell. Text in text boxes inside a cell is kept too.
  • Numbers: values such as 1,234, -3, 12.50 and 45% are stored as numbers with a matching number format, so sums and charts work.
  • Table captions: used as headings when all tables go on one sheet.

Values that stay text on purpose

Converting everything that looks like a number would damage data, so these are left as text: values with leading zeros (zip codes, 010 phone numbers, student IDs), anything with a hyphen or dot pattern such as 02-123-4567, 2024.01.05 or 880101-1234567, numbers longer than 15 digits (Excel would round them), and numbers with units such as 1,000원. Switch off Store numbers as numbers to keep every cell as text.

What is not copied

Fonts, colours, borders, cell shading and the HWP column widths are not copied. Columns are sized to fit their text instead. Pictures inside cells and formulas are not carried over; a formula cell keeps the result shown in the document. Excel shows line breaks inside a cell once Wrap Text is turned on for it.

CSV files

Each CSV holds one table, saved as UTF-8 with a byte order mark so Excel shows Korean correctly. CSV has no merged cells, so a merged area keeps its text in the first cell and leaves the rest empty.

Private by design

Everything runs in your browser. The file is not uploaded. HWP 5.0 files are read directly; password-protected HWP files, distribution documents and HWP 3.0 files are opened with the open source rhwp engine (about 4 MB, loaded once).

Frequently asked questions

Do merged cells stay merged?

Yes. Every merged cell in the HWP table becomes a merged range in the Excel sheet, in the same place.

Will my phone numbers lose the leading 0?

No. Values that start with 0, contain hyphens, or are longer than 15 digits are kept as text, so 010-1234-5678 and 00123 stay exactly as written.

Can I put all tables on one sheet?

Yes. Choose All tables on one sheet. Each table gets a heading row with its number and caption, and a blank row separates tables.

Does it work with HWPX files?

Yes, both the older .hwp format and the newer .hwpx format work.

What about tables inside tables?

They are listed separately and start unticked, because their text already appears in the outer cell. Tick them to get each one on its own sheet.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The tables are read and the workbook is built in your browser.
