Meme Generator

Use any picture you have, type a top and a bottom line, and get the classic meme look: heavy white letters with a black outline. Long captions shrink to fit, extra text boxes can go anywhere, and the result downloads without a watermark. The tool has no gallery of famous meme images; you bring the picture.

How to use Meme Generator

  1. 1Drop your picture into the box. A photo you took or a screenshot you are allowed to use works best.
  2. 2Type the Top text and the Bottom text. Long lines wrap and shrink automatically.
  3. 3Tap a caption on the image to change its font, color, outline or size. Changes to the top or bottom caption apply to both.
  4. 4Press Add another text box for labels anywhere on the picture, and drag them into place.
  5. 5Choose JPG or PNG and press Download meme.

Why meme text looks like that

The classic meme caption is white, in a condensed heavy typeface, with a thick black outline. The outline is what makes it work: white letters stay readable on dark areas, the black edge keeps them readable on light ones, so the same caption works on any picture without you thinking about contrast. This tool starts with exactly that: Impact (or the nearest heavy font your device has), white fill, a black outline at 9% of the font size, and all capitals.

You can change all of it. Switch off ALL CAPS for a softer look, change the outline color, or pick another font. The Korean-capable Noto Sans KR is in the list for captions in Korean.

How auto-fit works

The top and bottom captions have auto-fit switched on. Each starts at the size you set (11% of the image width by default) and wraps at 94% of the width. If the wrapped caption is taller than 30% of the image, or a single word is still wider than the line, the size is reduced in small steps until it fits. The result: a three-word caption is big, a three-sentence caption is smaller but still inside its band, and neither runs off the picture.

The size slider on an auto-fit caption is the largest size allowed, not a fixed size. Turn auto-fit off if you want a fixed size, for example to make the top and bottom lines exactly the same height. Extra text boxes do not auto-fit; their size is what you set.

Writing captions that land

  • Top line sets up, bottom line pays off. Keep the joke in the bottom line, so people read the setup first.
  • Fewer words means bigger letters. On a phone screen, a caption of more than about 12 words in one band gets small.
  • Use an extra text box to label things in the picture rather than describing them in the caption.
  • Leave faces visible. Drag the captions up or down a little if a band covers someone's eyes.

Fonts on different devices

Impact is installed on Windows and macOS but not on most Android phones or Linux. Where it is missing, the browser uses the next font in the list: Arial Black if available, otherwise Noto Sans KR from this site drawn in bold. The caption still looks like a meme, just a little wider. What you see in the preview is exactly what the download will contain, so check it there.

For Korean captions, Noto Sans KR is loaded from UtilityNest the first time it is needed. ALL CAPS only changes Latin letters; Korean is left as typed.

Using pictures you are allowed to use

We do not offer a template gallery of well-known meme images, because most of them are frames from films, TV and photos owned by someone else. Your own photos, your own screenshots of things you made, and images released for reuse (for example under a Creative Commons license that allows changes) are safe starting points. If you are making a meme for a company account, follow the same image rules you would for any other post.

Saving and sharing

The meme is saved at the full size of your picture. JPG (quality 90) is the smaller file and what chat apps and social sites expect. PNG keeps the edges of the letters perfectly sharp but is several times larger for photos. Either way, nothing is added: no watermark, no logo, no link.

If a site rejects the file as too large, shrink it with Compress Image. For more control over text, such as rotated labels, background boxes or more than ten boxes, use Add Text to Image, which has the same text engine without the meme defaults.

Frequently asked questions

Does the meme have a watermark?

No. The downloaded image contains only your picture and your text.

Why is there no gallery of popular memes?

Those images are usually stills from films, shows or photos owned by others. The tool is for pictures you have the right to use, such as your own photos and screenshots.

My caption is long. Will it fit?

Yes. The top and bottom captions shrink step by step until they fit within the image width and 30% of its height. Very long text becomes small, so shorter captions read better.

Can I make a meme in Korean?

Yes. Type Korean in any caption. In fonts without Korean letters, such as Impact, the Korean is drawn in Noto Sans KR, which is bundled with the site. You can also choose Noto Sans KR directly.

Can I move the top and bottom text?

Yes. Drag them on the picture. They keep auto-fitting wherever you put them.

How many text boxes can I add?

The top and bottom captions plus up to 8 extra boxes.

Is my picture uploaded anywhere?

No. It is opened and drawn in your browser, and the download is created on your device.
