How to use HWP Viewer
- 1Drop the .hwp or .hwpx file on the page or tap Choose a file. The viewer engine (about 4 MB) downloads the first time only.
- 2Scroll through the pages, or use the arrows, the page number box and the thumbnails to jump to a page.
- 3Use Fit width, 100% or the zoom buttons to change the size. On a computer, Ctrl + mouse wheel zooms too.
- 4Type a word in Search in document to highlight every match. Press Enter for the next match and Shift+Enter for the previous one.
- 5Need a file? Use Save as PDF, Extract text or Save the pictures to carry on with the same document without choosing it again.
A real page viewer, not a text dump
HWP is the format of Hancom Office Hangul (한글), used by Korean schools, government offices and companies. Word, Google Docs and Preview cannot open it. This viewer uses rhwp, an open-source HWP engine compiled to WebAssembly, to lay out each page with its tables, pictures, shapes, headers, footers and page breaks, so you see the document the way it was designed.
It opens both the classic binary .hwp (HWP 5.0) format and the newer zipped .hwpx format. Pages are drawn only when they scroll into view, so long documents open quickly and stay light on memory, including on phones.
Zoom, page list and search
Fit width sizes the page to your screen, which is what you want on a phone. 100% shows the page at its real size, and the zoom buttons go from 25% to 400% while keeping your place on the page. The thumbnail list (a strip on phones, a sidebar on larger screens) shows every page and marks the ones that contain search matches.
Search reads the text the engine laid out on each page, so it finds words in body text, tables and text boxes, ignores spaces and upper or lower case, and highlights the exact spot on the page. Searching a scanned page (a picture of text) finds nothing, because there is no text in it.
Private by design
Your document is opened inside your browser. Only the viewer program and, if your device has no Korean font, the free Noto Sans KR font are downloaded from this site. The document itself is never uploaded, so it is safe to open contracts, payslips and official letters. Password-protected HWP files ask for the password, and it is checked on your device too.
Honest limits
- Pages use the fonts on your device. Hancom-only fonts such as HY fonts or Hamchorom are swapped for similar Korean fonts, so a line can break at a slightly different place than in Hancom Office.
- Very old HWP 3.0 files, charts, OLE objects and form controls may not appear exactly as in Hancom Office.
- The viewer is read-only. To edit a document you still need Hancom Office or another HWP editor.
