Add Text to Image

Type on a photo with as many text boxes as you need. Drag each box where you want it, resize it with its round handle, and style it with a font, color, outline, shadow or a background box. The image is saved at its original resolution, and it never leaves your device.

How to use Add Text to Image

  1. 1Drop a photo into the box (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC).
  2. 2Type your text in the Text field. Press Enter for a new line.
  3. 3Drag the text box on the image to move it. Drag the round handle at its corner to make the text bigger or smaller.
  4. 4Choose a font, color, alignment and effects. Press Add text for another box; tap any box to edit it again.
  5. 5Choose a format and press Download. The size in pixels on the button is the size you will get.

Every setting, briefly

  • Size is a percentage of the image width, so 8% on a 4000-pixel photo is 320-pixel letters. Because it is relative, the preview and the saved file match exactly.
  • Text box width is where lines wrap. At 90% a long sentence wraps before the edge of the photo; lower it to make a narrow column of text.
  • ALL CAPS turns Latin letters into capitals when drawing. What you typed is unchanged, so you can switch it off again. Korean has no capitals and is not affected.
  • Outline draws a stroke around each letter. Thickness is a percentage of the font size, so it scales with the text.
  • Shadow adds a soft drop shadow in the color you pick. With an outline on, the shadow is cast by the outline.
  • Background box puts a rounded rectangle behind the text. Lower its opacity for a see-through bar.
  • Rotation turns the box from -180 to 180 degrees around its center. Opacity fades the whole box, text and background together.
  • Line spacing sets the distance between lines, from tight (0.8) to airy (2.2).

Fonts, including Korean

Two fonts are bundled with the site so they look the same on every device: Noto Sans KR and Noto Serif KR. Both cover Korean and Latin letters. They are loaded from UtilityNest itself the first time you use them, which takes a moment on a slow connection; the text redraws when the font arrives.

The other choices use fonts your device already has (Impact, Georgia, Courier New and the device default), plus two English handwriting fonts, Caveat and Dancing Script. Any Korean letters in those boxes are drawn in Noto Sans KR or Noto Serif KR so they never turn into empty squares. If Impact is not installed, as on most Android phones, a similar heavy font or Noto Sans KR is used instead.

Bold is drawn as a real bold where the font has one. The bundled Korean fonts have a regular weight only, so the browser thickens them for bold; it looks fine at headline sizes but is not identical to a designed bold weight.

Making text readable on a busy photo

  1. Put the text where the photo is calm: sky, a wall, a blurred background.
  2. Use white text with a dark outline at around 6 to 10%, or dark text with a light outline. This works on almost any background.
  3. If the background changes from light to dark behind the words, turn on Background box at 50 to 70% opacity instead.
  4. Keep it short. Two lines at a large size read better than five lines at a small one, especially on a phone screen.
  5. Check the result at the size people will see it. Make your browser window narrow, or look at it on your phone, before you share it.

Placing text precisely

Dragging is quickest, but you can also tap a box and use the arrow keys: each press moves it 1% of the image, or 5% with Shift held. Alignment changes which edge stays put when the text changes length: left-aligned text grows to the right, centered text grows both ways, right-aligned text grows to the left. For text in a corner, align it to that side so editing the wording does not push it off the image.

Duplicate copies the selected box with all its styling and places the copy slightly lower and to the right. It is the fastest way to make several captions that look the same.

Quality, formats and what is removed

The photo is redrawn with your text at its full original size. Choosing Same as original keeps a JPG as JPG and a PNG as PNG; JPG and WebP are saved at a quality of 92 out of 100, which is very hard to tell apart from the original. Save as PNG if the image is a screenshot or graphic with sharp edges.

The new file does not contain the original's metadata: camera model, date taken and GPS location are not copied. That is usually what you want for a picture you are about to post. If you need to keep the date, note it before you start. To check what a photo contains, open it in the Photo Metadata Viewer.

If something does not look right

  • Korean letters appear late or in a plain font. The Korean font is still loading. Wait a second; the preview redraws when it is ready. The download waits for it too.
  • A long word runs off the edge. Words wider than the text box are broken between letters. Make the text smaller or the box wider.
  • The text box is hard to grab on a phone. Tap the box's name in the row above the settings to select it, then drag it, or use a larger size while placing it and shrink it afterwards.
  • The file is larger than the original. The original may have been saved at a lower quality. Choose JPG, then run it through Compress Image if needed.

For a watermark repeated across many photos, Watermark Image applies the same text to a whole batch. For captions in meme style, the Meme Generator sizes the text to fit automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I write in Korean on a photo?

Yes. Choose Noto Sans KR or Noto Serif KR, which are bundled with the site. Korean typed into other fonts is drawn in Noto as well, so it never shows as empty boxes.

How many text boxes can I add?

Up to 20 on one image. Each has its own font, size, color, effects, rotation and position.

Does adding text reduce the image quality?

The image keeps its full pixel size. JPG and WebP are re-saved at quality 92, which is visually very close to the original; choose PNG if you want no compression at all.

Can I edit the text after downloading?

Not in the downloaded file, because the text becomes part of the picture. As long as the page is open you can change anything and download again.

How do I make text stand out on a bright photo?

Use dark text, or keep white text and turn on Outline in black, or turn on Background box with a dark color at around 60% opacity.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is opened and edited in your browser, and the saved image is created on your device.
