What converts well, and what does not

Text, bold, italic, underline, strikeout, colours, font names and sizes, alignment, indents, line spacing, numbered and outline headings, tables with merged cells, borders and shading, pictures, footnotes, headers, footers, page numbers, links, page size and margins.

Word lays out pages itself, so line breaks and page breaks can move. Drawn shapes and lines, grouped objects, charts and OLE objects are not carried over, equations become plain script text, and text in grouped boxes is moved into the page. If you need the exact look, use HWP to PDF.

How to use HWP to Word

  1. 1Drop one or more .hwp or .hwpx files into the box. Each file is converted as soon as it is added.
  2. 2Choose how text boxes should be handled: keep them as Word text boxes for a closer layout, or move their text into the page so it is easier to edit.
  3. 3Turn on Use common fonts if the Word file will be opened on computers without Hancom fonts such as Hamchorom or HY fonts.
  4. 4Check the summary under each file, then click Download .docx. For an HWP file you can also save an HWPX copy, and with several files you can download everything as a ZIP.

How the conversion works

HWPX files are read directly: they are ZIP packages of OWPML XML, which the tool translates element by element into Office Open XML. Binary HWP 5.0 files, distribution (read-only) documents and old HWP 3.0 files are first opened with the rhwp engine (open source, compiled to WebAssembly, about 4 MB the first time) and saved as HWPX in memory, then converted the same way. Everything happens in your browser tab.

What is kept

  • Text formatting: font names, sizes, bold, italic, underline, strikeout, colours, highlight, superscript and subscript, character spacing and width.
  • Paragraphs: alignment, indents and hanging indents, spacing before and after, line spacing, page breaks. Outline paragraphs (개요) become Word headings, so the Navigation pane works, and their automatic numbers such as 1. or 가. are written as text.
  • Tables: column widths, merged cells across rows and columns, cell borders, background colours, vertical alignment and nested tables.
  • Pictures: PNG, JPG, GIF and BMP pictures at their original size, inline or floating at the same position on the page. BMP pictures are converted to PNG.
  • Notes and page furniture: footnotes, endnotes, headers, footers, page numbers, links, page size, orientation, margins and sections.

What changes or is left out

  • Word lays out lines and pages with its own rules, so a page can end a few lines earlier or later than in Hancom Office, especially when fonts are replaced.
  • Drawn shapes and lines without text, grouped drawings, charts, OLE objects and form controls are not converted. The summary tells you how many were left out.
  • Equations are written as their HWP script text (for example a over b), not as Word equations.
  • Text boxes inside grouped drawings become regular paragraphs below the place they were anchored.
  • Password-protected HWPX files cannot be read. Password-protected HWP 5.0 files can be opened if you know the password.

When you need the document to look exactly like the original, use HWP to PDF instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an HWP file in Microsoft Word?

Word cannot open HWP files directly. Convert the file here to .docx, then open the downloaded file in Word. Tables, images and text formatting are kept.

Does it work with HWPX files too?

Yes. Both the older binary .hwp format and the newer .hwpx format are supported. Distribution (read-only) documents and HWP 3.0 files usually convert too, through the rhwp engine.

Will the Word file look exactly like the HWP file?

Close, but not always identical. Word recalculates line and page breaks, and fonts that are not installed are replaced. Text, tables and pictures are all there; for a pixel-exact copy use HWP to PDF.

My HWP file has a password. Can I convert it?

For HWP 5.0 files, yes: enter the password when asked. It is checked in your browser and never sent anywhere. Password-protected HWPX files need to be unlocked in Hancom Office first.

Can I convert HWP to HWPX here?

Yes. After converting an .hwp file, click Download .hwpx to save the same document in the newer HWPX format.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the file stays on your device.
