How to use Word to HWPX
- 1Drop one or more Word .docx files into the box, or press Choose files. Conversion starts right away.
- 2Pick a font option. The default, Keep the Word fonts, keeps line and page breaks closest to Word. If the PC that opens the file lacks the Word fonts, choose Use Korean fonts: Calibri, Arial and similar fonts become Malgun Gothic and Times-style fonts become Batang. Korean fonts set English letters wider, so the page count can grow a little.
- 3Check the summary under each file to see what was kept and what changed.
- 4Press Download .hwpx. With several files you can download them all as one ZIP.
How the conversion works
A .docx file is a ZIP of Office Open XML parts. The tool reads those parts with the browser's own XML parser and writes the matching OWPML parts (the KS X 6101 standard behind HWPX): a font, character shape and paragraph shape table in header.xml, one section file per page layout, and the pictures in BinData. Word styles become Hancom styles, so Normal becomes 바탕글 and Heading 1 becomes 제목 1. Nothing is sent to a server.
What carries over
- Text: font names and sizes, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, colours, highlight, superscript and subscript, character spacing
- Paragraphs: alignment, indents and hanging indents, spacing before and after, single, multiple, exact and minimum line spacing, page breaks, headings
- Lists: bullets and numbers, including Korean styles such as 가. and ①, with the hanging indent Word used
- Tables: column widths, merged cells across and down, borders, cell shading, Word table styles, header rows, long tables that run over several pages
- Pictures: PNG, JPG, GIF and BMP at their size in Word, inline or floating; WebP and SVG are turned into PNG
- Page: paper size, orientation, margins, sections, columns, headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes and endnotes
Why the result is HWPX and not HWP
HWPX is Hancom's current open format, standardised in Korea as KS X 6101. Hancom Office 2014 and later, Hancom Docs and the free Hancom viewer open it. The older binary .hwp format is not written here, because a browser cannot produce it reliably enough for documents you need to submit. If someone asks for .hwp specifically, open the .hwpx in Hancom Office and use File, Save As, HWP.
Good to know
- Hancom Office lays out lines and pages itself, so a page can end a few lines earlier or later than in Word. Check the page count before you print or submit.
- List numbers are written as text. They look the same, but they do not renumber if you insert an item later in Hancom Office.
- The text of Word text boxes is moved into the page right after the paragraph the box was anchored to. Drawn shapes, charts, SmartArt and embedded objects are left out, and equations become plain text. The summary tells you when this happened.
- Password-protected Word files and old .doc files cannot be read. Remove the password or save as .docx in Word first.
- No Hancom Office was used to build this tool. Outputs were checked with the open-source rhwp HWP engine, an XML schema check of the OWPML format, and by converting them back to Word.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert Word to HWP without Hancom Office?
Yes, to HWPX. Drop the .docx file here and download the .hwpx. You need Hancom Office, Hancom Docs or the Hancom viewer only to open the result, not to make it.
Will a government office or school accept HWPX?
Most do, because HWPX is Hancom's standard format and opens in every Hancom Office version from 2014 on. If a form insists on .hwp, open the .hwpx in Hancom Office and save it once as .hwp.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The Word file is read and converted inside your browser. Only the page itself is downloaded from this site, and the document never leaves your device.
Do tables and images come through?
Yes. Tables keep their column widths, merged cells, borders and shading, and long tables continue across pages. Pictures keep their size in Word. Charts and SmartArt are the exception and are left out.
Why do the fonts look different in Hancom Office?
Hancom Office can only show fonts installed on that PC. Choose Use Korean fonts to swap common Western fonts for Malgun Gothic and Batang, which every Hancom install has.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. Open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, then convert that file here.
