PDF to HWP (beta)

Use this when you have a Korean notice, form or letter as a PDF and need to edit it in Hancom Office (한글) without the original file. The converter reads the text, lines, shaded cells and pictures in the PDF, rebuilds paragraphs, tables, headers and page numbers as real Hancom features, and writes an .hwpx file that Hancom Office 2010 SE+ and later opens. It all runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. It is a beta and works best on plain official documents.

Beta. Everything runs in your browser and your PDF is never uploaded. Works best on notices, official letters and forms with ruled tables. Posters and heavily designed pages need more touching up, and OCR for scanned pages is experimental.

How to use PDF to HWP (beta)

  1. 1Drop one PDF into the box, or click to choose it.
  2. 2Change the options if you need to. Keep pictures and Rebuild tables are on by default. Turn on OCR for scanned pages if the PDF is a scan; it downloads language data the first time and takes a few seconds per page.
  3. 3If the PDF has a password, type it in. The password stays on your device too.
  4. 4Click Convert to HWPX. When it finishes you can compare the PDF and the converted document side by side.
  5. 5Click Download HWPX, then open it in Hancom Office and check fonts, page count and tables.

How the conversion works

A PDF stores almost no structure. It only says which glyph to draw where, in which font. This tool reads every glyph, line, filled cell and image, groups glyphs on the same baseline into lines, and splits lines into paragraphs from their spacing and indents. Areas enclosed by ruling lines and fills become Hancom tables with merged cells, and text repeated in the same place on every page becomes a real header, footer or page number. Finally it writes the document in HWPX, Hancom's open format (KS X 6101). All of this happens in your browser.

What works well and what does not

Notices, official letters, application forms and quotes that were made in Hancom Office and saved as PDF convert best. In a test on four real Korean public notices, more than 98% of the text came back in the right order. Tables aligned with spaces instead of lines, posters with many text boxes, and scanned PDFs that contain only pictures of text need much more touching up. Fonts that are missing on your PC are replaced, which changes line breaks and can add pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and converted inside your browser. Only the page and the converter code are downloaded from this site.

Will the result look exactly like the PDF?

Not exactly. Paragraphs and tables have to be rebuilt, so fonts, page breaks and some table cells can differ. Plain official documents usually need only light fixes.

Why HWPX and not HWP?

HWPX is Hancom's open standard format and can be written reliably in a browser. Hancom Office 2010 SE+ and later opens it, and you can save it as .hwp from there.
